Code Enforcement
Function
The Code Enforcement Office is a function of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Department of Community Planning. Staff supports the divisions within Community Planning on all aspects of code enforcement and assists other FNSB departments with the issuance of monetary citations.
Responsibilities
The Code Enforcement Office investigates land use code complaints and enforces violations of FNSB codes within the Fairbanks North Star Borough (including zoning code violations within the Cities of Fairbanks and North Pole). Staff conducts field inspections and takes appropriate action to gain compliance up to and including enforcement letters, monetary citations and civil action initiated by the FNSB Legal Department.
Staff serves the public with information on FNSB ordinances at the counter, via phone, and in the field and works with property owners to provide an understanding of their rights and responsibilities under FNSB codes. The Code Enforcement Office strives for fair, consistent, timely and transparent handling of cases and makes great effort to encourage voluntary compliance and develop reasonable solutions. In fulfilling these responsibilities, Staff works with other Borough departments as well as State and Federal agencies.
Mission
Our mission is to protect public health, safety and welfare within the FNSB, protect private property rights and property values within the context of existing codes, and to minimize conflicts between neighbors and incompatible land uses.
