Who was the Berry room named after?

Can I check my email at the library?

Yes, if your email account is Web-based. Web-based means that you use Internet Explorer or other Web browsers to check your email. Examples are Hotmail, Yahoo mail, etc.

Can I pay my library bill online?

No, the library is unable to offer this service at this time. Payment may be made in cash, or by check or money order.

Can I print from my camera?

Yes, unless your camera requires that software be installed on our computer in order to print. Public computers at Noel Wien and North Pole Branch Libraries have cables for USB devices. Both facilities offer black-and-white printing for $0.10/each, and Noel Wien Library provides color printing for $0.50/each.

Can I print from my computer disk?

Yes, you can print at Noel Wien or North Pole Branch Libraries if your document was created in Microsoft Office or is available in portable document format (.pdf). Please note: Microsoft Works documents will not print unless they have been saved in the rich text format (.rtf).

Can I print from the Internet?

Yes, Noel Wien Library and North Pole Branch Library provide black-and-white printing for $0.10/page. Noel Wien also offers color printing for $0.50/page. Coins or bills may be used to pay for printing.

Can I reserve an Internet computer?

Yes, you can reserve an Internet session in person at Noel Wien Library by using our automated reservation system. You can call the North Pole Branch Library at 488-6101 to reserve a session for the current day only. Please see the Internet Use Policies and Procedures for more information.

Can I use my library card at UAF library?

Yes, you can after completing UAF's registration form.

Can I use my UAF card at the Borough libraries?

Your UAF card will not work at the Noel Wien and North Pole Branch libraries, but library staff can assist you with obtaining a borough library card if you are eligible. Please see the Registration policy for more information.

Can my child be in the library without me?

The Patron Conduct Policy states that library privileges may be denied for "leaving a child under the age of 9 unattended in the library or without the supervision of an adult."

Do the Borough buses stop by the libraries?

The Red and Blue lines stop near the Noel Wien Library. The Green line goes to North Pole, and stops within walking distance of the North Pole Branch Library.

Do you have a copier?

Black and white copies are available at Noel Wien and North Pole Branch libraries for $0.10/page. The copiers take both coins and bills for payment.

Do you have a fax machine?

No, neither library has a public fax machine. A list of locations that provide fax service is available at the Noel Wien Reference Desk. North Pole Branch Library staff can refer you to fax locations in their area.

Do you have Federal tax forms?

Yes, a limited supply of Federal tax forms are available at the Noel Wien and North Pole Branch libraries during the filing period. In addition, reproducible forms are available at both libraries, and Reference staff can help you locate forms online.

Do you have magazines?

Yes, both libraries have magazines. Noel Wien subscribes to approximately 500 popular titles and North Pole Branch has approximately 100 titles. The Reference Desk can also provide information about accessing online magazines articles from home or work.

Do you have newspapers?

Yes, Noel Wien and North Pole Branch Libraries have newspapers in hard copy as well as online access to thousands of newspaper articles. Noel Wien has many local, statewide and national subscriptions available. North Pole Branch Library has a local, a statewide and a national title available. Older issues of some newspapers are available on microfilm at Noel Wien Library, including back issues of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

Do you have Permanent Fund Dividend applications?

Yes, a limited supply of Permanent Fund Dividend applications is available during the PFD filing period. You may also complete the application online at http://www.pdf.alaska.gov/

Do you have typewriters?

Yes, both libraries provide typewriters on a first-come, first-served basis, but we do not provide paper or other supplies.

Do you have word processing computers?

Yes, Noel Wien Library has three computers and the North Pole Branch Library has one. The libraries use Microsoft Office programs, and sell blank CDs if you need to save your document. Each computer has a USB connector for thumb drives.

Do your Internet computers have filtering software?

Yes, per Borough Ordinance 2003-51, all computers in the Library must have filtering software. Persons 17 years of age and older may have an unfiltered session upon request. You may be asked to prove that you are at least 17. Please see the Internet Use Policies and Procedures for more information.

How do I ask a reference question?

You can ask a reference question in person at the Noel Wien Library Reference Desk or at North Pole Branch Library, by phone at 459-1020 (select Reference Desk) or at 488-6101 (North Pole Branch), or by email at fairbanks@fnsblibrary.us. For email questions, please furnish your name, and as much detail as possible about your question.

How do I contact the library?

How do I get a library card?

To get a library card, you will need to complete an application, and provide a photo ID and verification of your local mailing address. There is no minimum age requirement for obtaining a card for a child, although anyone under the age of 14 will need a parent's or guardian's signature prior to obtaining a card. Please see the Registration Policy for more information.

How do I get my PIN?

You can either call or visit the Noel Wien or the North Pole Branch libraries to get your PIN. Please have your library card number available if you call the library. If you come in, bring your library card or a picture ID.

How do I learn about children's programs?

The Children's departments at Noel Wien and North Pole Branch Libraries offer: Parents and Twos for 2 year olds and a parent or caregiver. Preschool Storytime for 3-to-5 year olds. Summer Reading Program for ages 2 to 18 School break activities for ages 3 and up. Tours and class visits for a variety of ages. Noel Wien also offers Mother Moose for children under 2, as well as Pajama Storytime for 3-to-10 year olds. Some programs require advance reservation. Please call each library (Noel Wien 459-1052 and North Pole Branch Library at 488-6101) to find out more details on these programs, and for information on other programs offered.

How do I place a hold on library items?

You can place a hold on a library item in person, or over the phone if you have your library card number. To place a hold online, select the item, click on the "Place Hold" link in the library catalog, and enter your library card number and PIN.

How do I renew an item?

To renew an item, you need your library card number. At Noel Wien Library, you can renew a library item in person at the Circulation Desk or, by phone at 459-1020 (select Circulation Desk). At the North Pole Branch Library you can renew an item in person, or by phone at 488-6101. To renew an item online, you will need your library card number and PIN. (See My Library Account on Web page.) You will not be able to renew the item if someone else has placed a hold on it, or if it has already been renewed once.

How do I request an interlibrary loan?

You can request an interlibrary loan in person at the Noel Wien Reference Desk or at North Pole Branch Library, by phone at 459-1020 (select Reference Desk), or at 488-6101 (North Pole Branch), or by email at fairbanks@fnsblibrary.us. For email request, please furnish your name, and as much detail as possible about your question.

How do I reserve a display case?

Display cases are available for non-profit organizations and qualified government agencies. To reserve a display case at the Noel Wien Library, contact the Display Coordinator at 459-1043. No display case is available at the North Pole Branch. Please see the Display Policy for more information.

How do I reserve a group study room?

You may reserve a group study room for up to 10 people at the Noel Wien Library, by visiting the Reference Desk, or by calling 459-1020 and select the Reference Desk from the menu. Rooms may be reserved for up to two hours per day, and you will need to leave your library card or identification with staff while using the room.

How do I reserve a meeting room?

The library offers the use of the Auditorium and Conference rooms for public meetings and programs of a non-commercial nature. Please read the Meeting Room Policy before submitting or filling out a meeting room application. After reading the policy, you may reserve the Auditorium or and Conference Room by contacting the library’s Administrative office at 459-1022 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and completing and submitting an application to use the meeting room. The form can be found on the library’s s web site, list of forms or obtained at the library. Completed forms can be mailed, faxed or returned to the library at the following address:

How do I return library material?

Library material from the Noel Wien Library, the North Pole Branch Library and the FNSB public middle schools and high schools may be returned at any of those locations. The material will be routed to the owning library.

How do I use the Internet at the library?

All Internet access at the libraries is free and filtered. The libraries provide Internet access via our computers, and, wireless access for your personal devices. Noel Wien Library also provides a network connection for your device if you do not have wireless capability. Both libraries have 15 minute QuickNet stations available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can only reserve an Internet session at Library in person, by using our automated reservation system. Please see the Internet Use Policies and Procedures for more information.

May I bring food and drink into the library?

Food may be eaten in the lobby at Noel Wien Library. Covered drinks may be brought into both Noel Wien and North Pole Branch Libraries with the restriction that the Children's Room in the Noel Wien Library allows neither food nor drinks.

What are the library hours?

The library hours for the Noel Wien and North Pole Branch libraries are provided at Address, Locations and Hours. Note: "click on the link "Map Directions" to get a MapQuest map to each of the libraries.

What kind of media equipment do you check out?

At Noel Wien Library you can use your library card to check out overhead and slide projectors. We charge $15.00 for the 3 day checkout.

Where are the libraries located?

Noel Wien Library (the main library), 1215 Cowles Street, Fairbanks, 459-1020, is located at the intersection of Airport Way and Cowles Street, and is across the street from the Hamme pool and diagonally across the intersection from Gottschalks. North Pole Branch Library, 601 Snowman Lane, North Pole, 488-6101, take the Santa Claus Lane exit off the Richardson Highway, go past the post office and a playground on your right until you reach a stop sign. After stopping, continue straight through the intersection and Santa Claus Lane will curve to the left. Turn right at the stop sign, and the library is on your immediate right.

Where do I return items when the libraries are closed?

Both the Noel Wien and North Pole Branch libraries have outdoor book drops.

Who was the Children's (Berry) Room named after?

The children's room was named after William D. Berry (1926-1979). He was the artist who conceived of the mural, "An Alaskan Fairy Tale," as a centerpiece of the children's room, and who was working on it at the time of his death. Bill Berry was also a noted wildlife illustrator, and wrote two children's books, Buffalo Land and Deneki.
